| Bowmen of Birstall |
The Bowmen of Birstall were formed 40 years ago in 1963. Originating in the Birstall area, the club moved to various shooting grounds before settling 28 years ago off Meadow Lane in the village. Unfortunately the summer of 2002 was to be our last year at that venue and after much searching the club has now relocated to Leicester Forest East at the 'Old Newtonians Rugby Club'. Although not in the Birstall area the club will be keeping its name. Over the years the club has become one of the strongest in the County and the Region, winning numerous county team trophies together with winning the National Indoor Championships Team title. The club is predominantly a target archery club having members past and present that have represented Leicestershire & Rutland, the East Midlands, England and Great Britain at both junior and senior level. The club runs a beginners course each year during the summer and holds several "Have a Go's" for local companies and groups. Mixed in with the shooting the club has social events each year such as walks, bike rides and an annual dinner. The clubs meets to shoot on Tuesdays and Fridays and visitors are always welcome. |

| Phoenix Archers |
We
will always promote members attempts to improve, and support
them with practical advice and coaching if required, but our
credo is to shoot to enjoy your archery, not just to win.
Shoot for the gold on the target, or the ‘kill zone' on a
rubber 3D stag! Achieving high scores can give a feeling of
accomplishment, and we promote ambition, but we believe
first and foremost that it’s essential for all archers to
get full enjoyment out of the sport they love. We
do not have a committee as such - we are all equal members
of Phoenix
Archers is affiliated to the Grand National Archery Society
(GNAS) which is the governing body of archery in Great
Britain, and to the East Midlands Archery Society (EMAS) and
the Leicester and Rutland County Archery Association (LRCAA)
. We are based in the lovely
and ancient In
addition to target shooting during the summer season (April
to October) we also hold 'field' shoots throughout the
winter months. Beginner’s courses are held at various
times of the year, with occasional open days to test
yourself against fun targets. Whatever the shoot,
qualified coaches are on hand at all times. Local
companies, schools and community groups are also welcome to
book a day for workers, employees and service users to come
and, after a short course in use and safety, test their
mettle on the field! The Social side plays a large part in
our club calendar and various quizzes, meals and
get-togethers are organized throughout the year. Although
our ground is available to members at all times, club nights
are officially on Tuesday and Thursday, and Sunday daytime. We
have a varied age spectrum of membership, with our youngest
talent aged 8. (Our oldest talent refuses to give his
age but we reckon he's all of 90!) We shoot traditional bows
(i.e. Longbow, flat bow, etc.) and recurves. Our website is
