County Coaching Resource (1.04.06)
5
The county currently has a resource of the following GNAS coaches:
4 County Coaches
17 Coaches
4 Level 1 Coaches
The coaching resource is available to any club or individual who wishes to make use of it by contacting the County Coaching
Organiser, Colin Timson Tel. 01455 822864
The county also has 7 archers who are currently undertaking a Level 1 Coach course. If there are any archers who wish to be considered for a Level 1 Coach course then they should contact the
CCO.
Note Level 2 will not be available until 2007
Statistics from the GNAS office show that the County currently has an archer to coach ratio of 25 to 1
(Derbyshire 26.1; Lincs 16.1; Northampton 18.1; Notts 10.1)
Junior Development Squad (JeDIS) 5
The Counties coaches are currently supporting the outdoor program for the
JeDiS.
JeDiS dates are – 20th May 06; 17th June 06 and 15th July 06
Coaching topics include Goal setting; Bow Tuning; Competition preparation; Shot Routine, as well as group coaching.
If there are any coaches not currently involved in the programme, but would like to be, contact the
CCO.
Any archers who have specialised knowledge, which could aid the development of the county juniors, should contact the Development Officer or Team Manager.
At present (April 06), the renewal of coaches by regional panels is still at the development stage and most renewals are still directed through the CCO or RCO. Coaches should still, however, actively pursue Continuous Professional
Development (CPD), as this will become a major part of the renewal process.
The current CPD points matrix will eventually be published on the GNAS Web site.
Proposed CPD renewal point targets are –
Level 1 - 10 points
Level 2 – 15 points
Level 3 – 20 points
Note – working at an event with a coach of higher grade earns 5 points per occasion.
National Coaching Development Conference (April 06) 5
The main points from the conference are summarised –
FITA Beginners Awards
The FITA Beginners award scheme has been designed to allow beginners in Archery to measure their progress against set standards. Their progress should be encouraged by the clubs and rewarded by the winning of FITA feather (Juniors under 12) and Arrow pins. Assessment is based on Performance, Skill and Knowledge.
The FITA award scheme came out last year and GNAS have tailored it to fall in line with the GNAS Coaching and Beginners Manual. The award scheme in the UK will be entirely in the hands of GNAS Club Officials. Verification of the awards should be made by the Clubs Coaching Development Officer or
CCO. The documentation of the scheme and its associated information is CD based.
GNAS Beginners Manual
Alongside the FITA Beginners Awards, GNAS have also issued a Beginners Manual which is designed to be given to Beginners at the start of the course and is based on the Level 1 Coaching structure.
The Beginners Manual is designed to support the FITA Beginners Awards; to give beginners a more consistent overview of the sport and to support the new coaching structure.
The Manual is contained on the FITA awards CD
Level 2 Coach programme
The Level 2 coach course is expected to be piloted at the end of 2006 and be generally available in 2007. Level 2 is expected to develop archers from the beginners stage and to supervise Level 1 coaches.
The structure of the course is proposed as –
50 hours of Tutor led sessions (Sports Specific 20hrs, Sports Science 10hrs, Generic Coaching 20hrs)
60 hours of Supported practice
20 hours of homework based on Personal action plans.
Performance Unit & 2012
The GNAS Performance Unit under Peter Suk and Barry Eley has obtained funding under the UK Sport Olympic Funding Package. This means that they can support more funded elite archers and operate a Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme. Two paid coaches will also be employed.
Long term Athlete Development; Player Performance pathways, County and Regional Squads, Junior talent identification and development schemes and Continuous Professional Development will all become more prominent in the build up to 2012.
The county development plan needs to be reviewed and clubs have been asked to submit any comments or recommendations for inclusion in the plan. As it is anticipated that there will be a strong coaching theme in the plan and with the issue of the FITA awards scheme and GNAS Beginners Manual, a meeting with Coaches and possibly Club Coaching representatives, will be arranged once the plan comments are received. Could you please let the CCO know if you would be prepared to attend such a meeting so that a suitable venue can be arranged.
